I got a couple of emails from people in Europe this week, other Americans living abroad like I am. You never know what detail of your life will resonate so that people reach out.
Both of the emails were similar. First, they thanked me for writing blog posts that were so helpful. One said she was trying to find a brand name so my posts this week seemed to be written for her. (That really makes my day!)
Both these people struggle with similar issues: they follow a lot of Internet marketers and they feel overwhelmed by all there is to do to have a strong online visibility.
Here's my advice to both: Narrow it down to three things you can do this week. Above all, actively participate on two sites: your own business blog and Twitter.
The third thing you should be working on are cornerstone content pieces. You can publish one or two key pieces on your blog, and they should be featured on stand-alone pages. This is the first thing you want visitors to your blog to read.
- Post on your blog (where you communicate your expertise)
- Tweet something, ask a question on Twitter (where you connect with others)
- Create cornerstone content (where you build your business and get readers to take action)
And of course, your bio or About page should be a key cornerstone piece, because this is where you tell your story… your real story, who you are, what your passions are, what makes you angry.
Here are some questions you should answer which will help you create your cornerstone content:
- Why did you decide to start blogging?
- What stirs you up?
- What gets you so excited you have to blog?
- What events were pivotal in your personal story that led you to the point where you must blog?
- What problems do you solve?
- How come these problems aren't already being solved?
- What's different and unique about your solutions?
- What's possible in an ideal world?
- How many different benefits do your clients experience?
- Who needs to know what you know?
- How can you connect your knowledge with the hopes, fears, desires and objectives of your target market?
- What action do you want your readers to take?
- How can people hire you or use your services?
- How will you get them to keep coming back?
What other questions are helpful when you go to write a key piece of content that works to market your business?
