You got me started on Typepad back in 2005, but I’ve been using hosted WordPress since 2007. I used to recommend Typepad to my students who were new to blogging, but now I have them start with WordPress.

I use a self hosted WordPress format. I started out with a free blogger.com setup and I quickly become frustrated with the limitations. I then went to WordPress.com and was so impressed I jumped to a self hosted WordPress format less than a day later!

I LOVE WordPress and the endless themes, plugins, and widgets are incredibly useful.

    Hi Patsi,

    This is especially relevant today.

We have clients on every sort of blogging platform and hand-coded system you can imagine.

For years I sent them to TypePad to simplify the setup and reduce complexity of the blogging process.

But (hosted) WordPress makes so much more sense today. It’s stable, robust, has killer development expertise; themes galore and unsurpassed SEO value.

Yes, TypePad is still a great platform. But for building a branded presence that you can call your own, WordPress rocks.
    Best,
    ME

    Patsi:
I switched from TypePad to WordPress. WordPress is free. Also, there seem to be more WordPress plug ins, giving it very good functionality.
My http://www.BudBilanich.com site is actually a WordPress blog.
Also, readers of your blog can get the eBook version of my new book, “Success Tweets: 140 Bits of Common Sense Career Success Advice, All in 140 Characters or Less” by going to http://www.SuccessTweets.com.

I’m glad to see you’ve switched to WordPress, too, Patsi. Years ago, when I was considering which platform to use to re-engineer my web site, I decided on self-hosted WordPress and I never looked back. I love the 1000s of available plugins. Admittedly, to get the most out of WP a regular person needs some help from a “geek,” but once things are set up, it’s easy sailing.

I must say I haven’t been paying attention to TypePad since, but from the pool results looks like only about 10% of your readers use TypePad, which surprises me knowing you and Denise were big on TypePad.

Interesting results, Patsi, as I didn’t expect to see so many self-hosted WP blogs.

Curious as to how many people now have integrated WP websites/blogsites? I changed my standard Frontpage website to a WP site about 18 months ago.

    Cheers,
    Syl

Wow, great responses folks, and the votes are still coming. I’m not surprised by your responses. Sylva added another point, a good question to ask next time I do a poll: how many people are now using a WordPress platform as their primary website? I know I do, over on ContentforCoachesandConsultants.com.

I too love Typepad for starting out, but am happy to have finally switched to WP. And I LUV the Headway theme! That’s another thing I need to ask peeps, what their fav WP themes are…

Thanks so much, send your friends and tweeples to vote here so we can get a good response rate! Thx!

I started on Blogger, then moved to Typepad, which I still have two blog on (couldn’t register multiple answers on your poll). The latest is on self-hosted WP.

I have to say as a WP n00b I’m having a hard time finding good stats about visits to check to correlate response with things I do like send out newsletters. Any suggestions?

Also, I’m getting a TON of spam comments every day, a problem I very rarely had on Typepad. What gives with that? Did I just get lucky or is that a common WP blog thing?

    Thanks, love your content!

    Daria,

To get stats on your visitors you could try these two options:
    A) WordPress Stats plugin
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/stats/

or, if you want more info
    B) Google Analytics for WordPress

Kari, the survey doesn’t show up in the rss feeds either. Thanks for letting me know. But I don’t think I am able to do anything about it. Thanks for sharing, looks like you are not alone. I switched from Typepad after many happy years, and am glad I did. I’ll write more about that experience some other time.

I am using WordPress for my blog. My webhost, Media Temple, offers it as a free add on. I’ll be using WP with Buddypress to start an online community for one of my clients. Looks promising.

Only problem with the poll is that allows for only one response. I have several blogs on multiple platforms.

I’m so frustreated and I’m about to throw in the towel with Social media. I am a blind person trying to make it on the internet for over Two years now, but its been a total nightmare for me due to the lack of accessibility on the net. At the moment I’m using Posterous. This is the only blogging platform that works with my screen reader, but I am noticing that they are adding new features and that means that I have to pack up my bags full of my content and find another Blogging site. I would love to be on the cutting edge and use Word press so I can get indexed by Google and get traffic, but its so hard for me to set
WP up with all the plug ins and themes. For all those taking this poll try this little experiment. It can open your eyes a little bit into an unfamiliar world & hopefully you will understand the importance of having accessibility in your web sites.

I’ve been designing websites for 15 years but just started blogging earlier this year. I tried Blogger and WordPress.com and then moved into WP Hosted. Except for the domain registration and pointing the nameservers, the setup takes about as long for a hosted solution as it does to create one online. The advantage is you have so much more control and functionality with a hosted blog. Thanks for the results.
