What Drives You? Your Business? Weekend musings…

Computer-laptop-connected-to-brain-clipping-path Have you spent a lot of time and money over your lifetime learning how to do something, like in your career or professon? In your sports? I sure have. I am driven.

Why do you do what you do? What drives you in your work?

I've studied a lot about what drives people to do what they do. Why do they keep on keeping on, in spite of mistakes, in spite of obstacles, in spite of a never-ending list of tasks and responsibilities and only so many hours in a day? Why do you? Here's why I persist…

If You Work for Yourself, Be a Good Boss
(Weekend musings…)

LuckyCalendar2010 Are you thinking about next year already? I am. I hate to say it, but this year's over. With the end-of-the-year holidays, and my vacation coming up, it's time to finish up projects, get them announced, and generate some revenues.

What are you doing to prepare for 2010? I'm writing a prediction about content marketing for a book, and I'm launching a couple of projects (sneak preview, Content Marketing for Smarties and Patsi's Private List).

(BIG announcement next week, on the teleseminar (don't forget to register here: How to Create Content Products with MyKnowledgeGenie.)

(Personal Note: This has been a strange year for everyone, political changes that leave one hopeful, excited, or scared, but certainly not apathetic; then there's been the economic uncertainty, global unrest, and, if you're nearing retirement age, some re-working of plans because of shrinking reserves. Whatever your situation, employed, self-employed, or out of work, I hope you do not give up, you maintain your energy and keep on working on those dreams.)

My point is this: make sure you're doing work you really love and you like your boss. You may have to be together longer than you expect! In my case, my boss is myself (not The Hubby, as he would like to think!)…

I'm sometimes difficult to work for. It's not that I work myself too hard, au contraire. I have a pretty good work ethic, I'm responsible and reliable. But I've got an even stronger "play ethic." I firmly believe that playing tennis everyday is the way to keep a healthy body AND, more importantly, a healthy brain. If I'm not having fun, none of this really matters as much.

The problem is the 3-4 hours that it takes for tennis. Especially when I'm organizing a project like the upcoming teleseminar for My Knowledge Genie. (Details here, don't miss it!)

Happy Birthday to Patsi, Her Blog, & Her Online Business

10thAnniversaryHappy Birthday to me! I'm celebrating 4 birthdays. Here's why:

  • I started this blog 5 years ago today. I've published over 1,000 posts, and have a steady stream of readers and visitors. Thanks to all you guys out there reading, thank you, thank you!
  • I quit drinking 24 years ago today. (This is what keeps me young, healthy, and sane!)
  • IMG_0319 I was born 65 years ago today. (I know, how did that happened? Must be some mistake…)

Believe me when I tell you I'm having more fun today than I did when I was young, rich and pretty. My tennis game has never been better, my husband seems to get wiser and funnier the longer we're together, even my cats Huey and Dewey seem to be spry and healthy. I am so grateful for family and friends, and to all my Web buddies and colleagues.

To celebrate, I'm preparing some free digital downloads, but I'm not finished yet. I'm also setting up a donation program for my favorite charity down here in Mexico, Los Ninos de Chapala y Ajijic. They help pay school expenses for needy kids.

I'll let you know how you can help and how you can access some helpful guides for easier content marketing, as soon as the festivities are over and I'm all set up for this anniversary & birthday project.

Thank you dear readers, you make blogging worthwhile. ;-))

Somewhere in Mexico…

I wanted to share some music and scenes from my home town… hope you enjoy it!

Easy Video Creation with Animoto

I'm playing around with video creation, using a free service called Animoto, pretty cool tool. Let me know what you think. I just experimented with a few photos I had taken on a recent Sunday, relaxing at home.

Things to Do When You Write:
I Love Salt, Hate Ants

Marching-ants I love salt. When I was a kid a used to dip my fingertips in salt and suck them. When I was a teenager, and afraid of gaining weight, I’d just lick the potato chips and throw them away. Or sometimes I’d suck on Cheetos and not actually eat them. Only in private, of course.

Then when I quit drinking, over two decades ago, my craving for salty things went away.  Unfortunately, it was replaced by a love for sugar and all things sweet. But that’s a whole other story…

Recently my taste buds seem to be changing back again. Right now I’m snacking on Mexican peanuts, very salty with a touch of lime. It’s only 10 a.m. and I already had breakfast. So, what’s that about?

I think it’s one of those, “It’s time to write, gee I’m hungry…” kind of thoughts.

Mexico Update: All’s Well

BlogSquadAug9-08028 Update from Mexico: All's well here in the lakeside town of Ajijic. There are some cases of flu in Guadalajara but so far none in our area. But the government and health agencies are all being precautious and Walmart and other workers all wear face masks just in case.

The worst part of this "pandemic" has been the shop and office closures. Retailers and restaurants have really lost business. That's a pity. But apparently cautions have paid off since there isn't really disease out of control.

I'm catching up on some work projects and will be back to blog posting in a day or two. Hasta luego!

Hasta la vista, baby…

AjijicDoorwayJuly06
In a few minutes, we're moving back to Mexico. I'm heading out with Huey and Dewey, our two cats, and a couple of huge suitcases. I'm taking the red-eye overnight from Tijuana to Guadalajara in the first of two trips to our home in Ajijic.

As some of you know, the Hubby and I have been part-time residents of Ajijic, a beautiful Mexican village on Lake Chapala since 2003. It's time to quit San Diego and get back home. But with DSL, satellite TV, and computer phone services, you'll hardly know the difference.

Except this blog will be running a little slower than usual. I'm back in SD next Monday and then we make the long trip by car, taking about 2 days to arrive back in the middle of paradise. I'll be back on regular blogging schedule after mid-January. Adios, amigos, hasta luego!

Thank You, Dear Readers!

SV500014
I can't help myself: this time of year I get gushy with gratitude. If you guys didn't stop by here to read what I have to say, I'd lose interest and probably eventually stop writing.

If I stopped writing, I'd probably get lazy about reading, and then I'd stop learning as much. It's thanks to you dear readers that I am motivated to stay on top of things and keep curious.

You make my day.

I'm off to Puerto Vallarta for a week with The Hubby. We'll be playing tennis, Scrabble, working out and writing a new fiction story about life in the year 2047.

I hope your weekend is fabulous. In my absence, I'm re-posting a series about effective blog writing using the 4 E's…educate, entertain, engage and enrich your readers. Have fun!

10 Great Things About 2008: Feeling gratitude for business

Since we Americans celebrate gratitude at this time of year, I made a list of things I’m grateful for in this new era of easy visibility and findability on the Web. Perhaps you can relate and will be inspired to make up your own gratitude list.

I’m grateful for (in no particular order):

  1. Business blogs that make it easy to stay informed and connect with others
  2. Twitter and Facebook that make it easy AND fun to build communities!
  3. Shopping cart systems like Kick Start Cart that make it easy to build a database list that’s easy to segment, broadcast messages, and seamlessly process registrations and purchases
  4. Google that makes it easy to do research and locate information and people
  5. Smart Internet marketers who by their clever ideas light the way and show us what’s possible
