Content Marketing: It’s not enough to publish

Feet_up_laptopOur friend Kathleen Gage, the Street Smarts Marketer, did a good job of answering an email from a client who questions the value of writing articles and submitting them to online article directories.

The person asks a question which many new to Web marketing wonder even if they don’t actually ask it: "I personally don’t know anyone who has gotten increased business from this tactic and none of my clients have either. Who is getting more business from this and what are they doing differently?"

This same question has cousins: "I’m not making any money from my blog/newsletter/website."

Kathleen turned this question into a great blog post entitled Maybe making money on and with the Internet is an out and out lie!

Here are Kathleen’s 8 key points you need to think about besides just writing content:

1. How well written is the article and is it specific to a market?
2. Do you have a title that grabs people’s attention?
3. Do you have a resource box at the end of the article?
4. Is there a compelling offer you are making in the resource box that would encourage the reader to visit your website, blog or a landing page?

A Kick in the Pants for Your 2008 Internet Marketing

Kick_powerIn 2004 I wondered if I’d done the right thing. I had quit doing my other jobs as a psychologist, a consultant, and coach. I figured that if I could focus my energies on doing just one specialty, newsletters and blogs, it would pay off and I could have the life I dreamed of: working from home on the computer with plenty of time to play tennis. No more offices, no more commuting, no more rigid working hours.

It’s now 2008, and for more than two years now, the income has steadily increased. In December, 2007 we had our best month yet, 66% more than December 2006. This year I plan to earn 50% more while working 20% less.

How? By implementing effective Internet marketing systems. When you’ve got the right systems in place, you get the right results.

For the past few weeks we’ve been blogging about our new kick-butt teleseminar The Law of Action we’re doing with Kathleen Gage, the Street Smarts Marketer. Most of the posts are on our Internet tips blog at www.BizTipsBlog.com and you can read about it there.

The Law of Action says any action is better than none. We’ll help prioritize and simplify 4 action steps a week to you take the right actions to get results for your business. There are a few seats left, so grab yours now, it starts on Monday January 7.

Great Content vs Marketing: What do I write about?

Orange_man_thinker
So now you realize that you need to publish content to get found online and use the Internet to grow your business; then there’s that big question looming like a dark cloud: What do I write about?

Brian Clark writes If Content is the New Advertising, What Does Your Advertising Say About You?

  • You need to attract attention and make people aware of who you are and what you do.
  • You then need to transform that attention into revenue or some other measurable benefit.

The plain truth is, great content is the most effective way to advertise online, because to be considered great content, it can’t look anything like what we consider advertising.

Great content naturally shows readers that you’re knowledgeable about your field of expertise, and that’s why it works so well.

Here’s an example. When you tell a story about a client with a problem and how you provide help, people are drawn into it. Especially if it is a common problem, people are identifying with the character in the story, and visualizing the results as you reveal how you solved the problem.

By engaging people through your story or anecdote, you are stimulating their own thought processes and imagination. They become one step closer to hiring you or to buying your product.

When I was starting my therapy business and needed clients, the first place I advertised was a family magazine. I bought space to write stories of people

3 Tips for Blog Writing When You’d Rather Not…

New_year_2008_and_old_2007_2006So far, looking at the poll results, it looks like readers want to master writing information products and blog posts for marketing success in 2008. I suspect many people haven’t voted yet, as some are still away on Holidays.

(Then again, if you’re like many people, reading blogs and surfing the Internet has a big appeal after spending a series of days with the relatives!) My blog traffic didn’t go down over these last few weeks, even though I haven’t been posting as frequently. But that’s another story…

Here’s a few quick tips to help you quickly get into the swing of writing good blog posts. I myself struggle with "writing rhythm:" when you’re hot, you’re hot, and when you’ve been away from it for a few days, you’re likely to write with the passion and enthusiasm of a librarian on Valium.

"Get-back-to-writing" tips:

  1. Go check with what your readers want to know. (See first paragraph above…and run your own poll.)
  2. Go check with what your competitors and/or peers are writing. (Then do something different!)
  3. Make a list of 3 helpful tips to help readers solve a problem that interests them.

Writing on the Web: New Blog Name

Here’s why I’ve changed this blog’s name from CoachEzines, to Writing on the Web: I started in 2004 primarily focusing on writing great ezines and blogs, but today’s Internet marketing includes many more ways to communicate. If you want to leverage the Internet to Attract, Sell, and Profit, you must learn new ways of Writing on the Web.

Why Content Marketing Matters: Result$

Multimedia
If you want to do business over the Internet you’ve got to write to reach and connect with customers. Writing on the Web is a blog about how to do that: how to use your words to build relationships with people who are looking for products and services on the Internet.

When I started writing this blog in 2004, I focused on writing great newsletters and ezines, hence the name, CoachEzines. It evolved as I included everything I was learning about writing for blogs. Now the name more accurately reflects the content you will find here: this is about all kinds of Writing on the Web.

It used to be to make money over the Internet, you wrote web pages and published a newsletter. The web pages were often a version of the company or professional brochure. Companies with budgets spent it on advertising, such as banners or pay-per-click programs. Marketing over the Internet was done like traditional advertising: all push, hoping for pull.

8 Ways to Market on the Web

Rapidly, as new software and Web tools emerge, the last few years have brought changes in the way we communicate on the Web with words:

  • Blogs
  • Ezines, e-newsletters
  • Web-based press releases
  • Article syndication directories
  • E-books, e-courses and autoresponders
  • Podcasts and audio files
  • Video clips
  • Social communities and networks

If you’re a solo professional, small business, or established company marketing on the Web, your words are all you’ve got to make an instant impression and connect with the people you’re trying to reach. Your words are your customer representatives: they’ve got to smile and be helpful, before they can sell. Do you know how to do that with your Writing on the Web?

Marketing is Changing, Are You?

You can see the changes in TV ads. There is more personality, more personal connection than ever before. Traditional marketing is now influenced by the Internet instead of the other way around.

Today it’s all about pull, not push. How can you engage people’s interests, get them to stay and enjoy their experience, and interact with you?

Have you learned the new ways of writing to connect with your target audience? I listed 8 ways any business must publish in order to have a strong Internet presence. How many of those Internet marketing tools are you using?

Where to Start?

If you’re new to marketing your business, products or services over the Internet, you should know that a brochure-style website, while ‘nice’ to have, isn’t the best way to start for fast results. Start with a blog.

A blog will get you found more quickly by people looking to solve their problems. Getting found on the Internet is one of the biggest challenges for business. Because blogs are keyword rich, search engines have an easy time indexing them. You can even build a strong web presence using a blog platform: a blogsite.

Get Published, Get Found, Get Clients

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? There are a lot of things that go into making money over the Internet. A blog is an important step, but by itself it won’t convert readers to clients.

You must have something to give away in order to build a list of prospects. What information do you have that others would love to know? What irresistible offer will compel readers to give you their email address?

That’s what it’s all about: give readers something so valuable that not only they will give you their email address, but they’ll tell their friends about it too.

A Shopping Cart Infrastructure

Of course in order for all this to work, you must have an impeccable process in place, an infrastructure that confirms their registration, and delivers the free product along with autoresponder email messages that reassures them their email is safe and not shared.

You can’t do that without a shopping cart service working in the background. What has this got to do with Writing on the Web? Well, you’re responsible for writing those confirmation emails and follow-up marketing requests. Your words with solidify your customers’ relationship with you, or they will break it off.

More Writing?

Well, yes. I used to think that to make things simple and easy, I would use the standard confirmation emails that shopping cart services provide. Well, no. You can’t do that.

On the Web, people expect personal attention and each contact is an opportunity to treat them special. You can include their first name in a confirmation email, so why not customize the message?

I could go on and on about what happens after that first point of contact but I think you already get the picture. From your first blog post to your sales confirmation messages, you have an opportunity to make people glad to know you and glad they found you. You do that with your Writing on the Web.

Who’s The Blog Squad?

Many people know me as co-founder of The Blog Squadtm. I’ve been helping people market with business blogs since 2004.

I started out marketing on the Internet in 1999 when I published Coaching Matters, a newsletter service for executive coaches and consultants. Today, that still exists, although it has morphed to ContentforCoachesandConsultants. I provide ezine, blog and marketing services including quality articles for executive coaches.

The Law of Action

If what I’m saying here makes sense to you: that you must learn and practice good writing skills if you want to attract clients to your business, then it’s time to act.

Good ideas and wisdom won’t matter if you don’t take action.

Here’s what you can do: sign up to get updates to this blog so we can stay in touch and I can bring you tips for Writing on the Web.

In the upper right hand corner of this blog is an email subscription form. Sign up by giving us your email address. It’s a secure service and your email is safe with us.

That way you won’t have to come searching for this blog; you’ll get updates delivered into your inbox.

The Yale Economic Review: Evil spammer???

Even when you follow the rules and use opt in lists and avoid overly promotional emails, you can get your emails blocked! We recently discovered our emails being blocked because of "spam content" – but it wasn’t  us that was reported as the offending culprit.

Our email signatures contained links to our Web pages hosted by Hostgator, a hosting service. Hostgator has one of their other sites reported as a spammer. I researched the IP address on SpamHaus and found that the offender is none other than The Yale Economic Review!

Because The Yale magazine was reported for spam, our sites which are hosted on the same server get tagged as spam! I don’t think many people know this can happen to them.
