Why Content Marketing with Video Is Key

Content marketing using video is a key marketing tactic if you want to get found online, get known, and get clients.

Here’s what’s important about publishing video on your sites: Your business can get quick, effective search engine results that used to take months or even years to achieve, all for next to nothing to produce (you don’t need to buy expensive equipment and hire a producer).

Your physical presence and voice on video creates a powerful connection to potential new clients in a way that text can’t accomplish. Images are simply attractive to the human brain, and we’re hard-wired to pay attention to faces.

A few years ago I invested considerable time, money and energy to go through the mentorship program of Tom Antion. Even back then (2005?) Tom had installed a video production studio in his house and was gearing up for making his own infomercials and training videos.

As a professional speaker, it was a natural marketing vehicle for Tom. And it is for anyone who sells themselves as a service provider: executive coach, consultant, trainer, author, financial consultant, doctor, lawyer…

Tom always taught that he never invested in marketing tools he couldn’t master himself. Even though as an Internet guru and millionaire, he has staff and plenty of money to throw at marketing, he believes that any professional can master video marketing with a few basic skills and smart tips.

You probably already know you should be using video to attract readers to your website, but you might not know how easy and quick it is. Publishing video on your site is like a client magnet.

What’s Missing in Content Marketing: Who and Why

Storytelling and personalization is the biggest missing piece in content marketing as I see it. People are good at writing about what they know. They aren’t as good about expressing who they are and why they do what they do.

If you’re not writing real stories, your content – on your blog, in your newsletter, on your web pages – runs the risk of being boring. You may be excited about what you do as a professional, but your clients will get bored or overwhelmed if you just throw information at them.

In the Content Marketing Webinar last week, I talked about communicating your back-story… the background about the why and who of your business. It’s especially important in service businesses where people hire you to help them solve a problem.

I once asked a guy who founded an online training service what his back-story was, and he didn’t know what I meant.

He thought I would see the obvious, that there was a gap in what was available online and an opportunity to make money. Okay, that’s exciting… to you and your spouse for sure.

But there’s always more to the story than that: Why did he personally spend considerable time, energy and money creating what he did?

Ahhh, that’s what I’ve been trying to figure out for the last 12 years. In the World Wide Web, there often seems to be no rules.

But that’s not true. You have to find what works for you in your business, with your target audience. And then publish a lot of content in many different forms. But if you’re a busy professional, unless you have staff, you don’t have time for everything.

Here’s a sample of what you’ll learn: For example, your content should accomplish these 4 goals:

  1. Connect with readers right away (ask them about their problems or challenges)
  2. Answer reader’s questions and educate
  3. Provide choices without confusion
  4. Compel readers to take one action

These goals apply to your website, your blog, your newsletters and everything you publish on the Web whether in text, audio or video.

Outsourcing your content needs will save you a lot of time, but only if you do it right.

Let’s say you’ve outsourced your newsletter and blog content to a professional writer, an expert in your field. The writer gives you content for your blog or newsletter. You publish it under your banner or logo, therefore it’s up to you to get it personalized and provide context.

This means you’ve either got to add your own stories, or introduce it with a personal note. (Or have the hired writer do this for you, which may cost more.)

Context: What I mean by providing context is that you need to connect the dots from your content to your business. You don’t want readers to read your content and say, “Oh, that’s interesting.”

I’m mean to say, sure you do, but that’s not enough. Draw a picture for them.

  • How does this content apply to the work you do with your clients?
  • Tell a story about a real person that illustrates the concepts in the article

Are you getting results from your content marketing? Does your website do it’s job? What about your e-newsletters? Or your blog? If these marketing tools were people, would you give them a raise … or fire their butts? Think about it.

It’s all fine and dandy to spend time, money and energy upgrading, re-designing, and adding content so that you have an automatic lead generating system online, but if your output is more than your incoming business results, it’s all just silly, isn’t it?

I’ve been working with some really great clients who understand good content marketing. And, I’ve reviewed more than my fair share of boring blogs, websites and newsletters this past month.

Content Rules: Insight and Originality Attracts Clients

Content marketing works: you can publish online content – blog posts, videos, webinars and web pages – that attracts clients to you. Using content marketing, you don’t have to chase after them, spend money on advertising, direct mail, or printed newsletters. Or as the authors of Content Rules say,

“Produce great stuff, and your customers will come to you. Produce really great stuff, and your customers will share and disseminate your message for you. More than ever before, content is king! Content rules!” ~ Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman, Content Rules: How to Create Killer Blogs, Podcasts, Videos, Ebooks, Webinars and More that Engage Customers and Ignite Your business (John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2011).

Wonderful. And, a lot of work. Getting other people so excited about your work they tell others about it is a challenge, unless, of course, your name is Seth Godin, Joe Pulizzi or Tim Ferriss.

If you’re a service professional, say a doctor, therapist, lawyer, financial adviser, or health expert, you need to create content that will help your clients. You need to become a trusted resource and go-to curator of tips and information that is helpful to people who are interested.

And you need to create strong feelings around your published content so that people will take action and keep coming back. You need them to subscribe, to sign up, to download, to ask you questions and engage with you so they become clients when they are ready.

Content Rule #2: Insight inspires originality. In their book Content Rules, Handley and Chapman lump two concepts into rule #2:

My Most Painful Struggle on the Web

I don’t think I’m alone in my pain. What I find most difficult is having to juggle multiple tasks when it comes to marketing online. It’s not the tasks themselves – it’s the thinking clearly and maintaining focus that gets me down.

I can blog about business blogging and content marketing. I love writing about all things blogging and marketing online.That’s what I do here on this blog,

But it’s difficult for me to shift gears and focus on writing content for executive coaches and management consultants, which is a big part of my business, with a different target audience and different message.

Leadership development is an area of expertise for me. I write Ph.D.-quality content for coaches and consultants. Although I love reading business books and crafting articles for my successful executive coaches, or ghost-blogging for them, I’m suffering from a split brain and it hurts!

Half my days are spent doing right-brained creative writing. The other half is left-brained managing the business, operations, accounting, client services, etc. I don’t do either well when I have to do both. I can focus on marketing and operations. The Real Reason Behind Blog Procrastination

Hi, my name is Suzanne Bird-Harris. I’m a WordPress consultant and online business coach. Patsi asked me to guest post on her blog, and it comes at a good time, on the heels of an interesting blog survey…

In a recent survey, I asked readers what their biggest hurdle was when it came to blogging. Not surprisingly, 25% of respondents said they were complete blogging newbies and needed guidance on the fundamentals of blogging…the technical know-how as well as content creation strategies.

Another 55% consider themselves capable, but know they have more to learn where technical know-how and content creation strategies are concerned.

The final 20% consider themselves competent and ready for advanced topics.

But, when I asked this same group where they experienced hurdles to overcome in blogging, look at the breakdown of the answers I got:

I’m not at all surprised that almost 72% see time as a major hurdle. I think we can all identify with that. But here’s the bad news:

Time is not the major hurdle you think it is. How much would ‘time’ be a factor if you knew exactly:

  • Why blogging is important to your business?
  • How to get a post up and out to the world?
  • What to blog about to reach your goals?
  • Where to promote your posts so your ‘right’ people see them?

Mmmmm…probably a lot less than it is now, don’t you think? If you’re one of the competent 20% ready for advanced topics such as SEO, this program I’m going to suggest is likely not for you. Check what’s covered, just to be sure.

Confidence (or lack of, rather) is the major hurdle.

Let’s face it, feeling like you don’t know what you’re doing when it comes to blogging really stinks. Besides making you think your learning curve is steep and endless, no one I know wants to do anything as public as blogging until they’re confident they know what they’re doing.

Confidence is born of knowledge and experience. But why gain them the ‘hard way’ – and in front of your audience, no less?

Business Blogging: Blast Past the Blunders

Here’s how to bust out of blog oblivion: Blogging 101: 6 weeks to Confident Blogging with the Queen of WordPress, Suzanne Bird-Harris.

The latest survey of small biz professionals revealed most people struggle with “Time:” 72% say they don’t have enough time to update their blog.

But we often say that, when in fact the reason we don’t have time is because we’re not sure what exactly what we’re supposed to be doing, or how to do it.

Once you master a skill, you can get it done quickly. And, if you’re successful at it, you want to do it again and again.

Here’s what the survey reveals:

  1. 72% struggle with enough time to blog
  2. 54% of people say they struggle  to know what to write about
  3. 52% aren’t sure how to apply SEO strategies to increase the reach of their blog

No wonder people run out of time. If you sit down to blog and have to figure out these two important things (#2 and #3), well, there goes your day!

To remedy this, Suzanne and I are going to teach the solutions to #1 and #2: blog writing and SEO workshop in January 2011.
