Book to Blog: Marketing Tip #4, Directory Submissions

Did you know there are more than 150 blog directories? Yep, and some of them specialize in blogs just like yours. But you can’t know this, or even begin to do the labor-intensive manual submission process unless you’ve got the list. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t spend my time doing this.

But it must be done, so that you start getting indexed by the search engine spiders. So here’s Marketing Tip #4:

4. Submit your blog to the 150+ blog directories. You can do this manually (10-12 hours of time), or there is a service that will do it for you for $95: http://snipurl.com/Blog_Directory.

Yes, that’s the Blog Squad’s own submission service, and yes, we can do a little self-promotion from time to time, especially when it has BIG benefits for you. No, we don’t actually do this work ourselves; we outsource to off-season elves in Santa’s workshop.

Blog to Book: Raise Your Hand in the Blogosphere

The Top 10 Ways to Market Your Book with a Blog continues with Step #3:

3. Participate in the blogosphere: Read and comment on other blogs in your field. This is a prime way to build readership of your blog. It is also a way of getting fresh content for both your blog and for your book.

Leaving comments is akin to raising your hand in the classroom or town hall meeting: every one turns to look at you and listen to what you have to say. Get out there and raise your hands.

Check out other blogs in your niche: use www.blogsearch.google.com, www.technorati.com, or www.google.com.

Even if you don’t have a blog yet, you should be researching what others are writing about on the web in your field. This is just plain Marketing 101. And finding other blogs in your niche will show you the possibilities.

Don’t worry, you’ll probably find as many bad blogs as good ones; and when you do, you will be inspired to do better. This is just plain Competition 101.

Blogs to Book: Get a Customized Banner (Tip #2)

Tip #2 of our series about 10 Ways to Market Your Book with a Blog is about branding your blog specifically for your book:

Continue the branding process that you started by getting a new domain name for your blog by creating a customized banner or logo for the book and putting it in the header of your blog.

The use of your customized branded header will mean your book gets instant recognition, and your blog will stand out from all the cookie-cutter look-alike blogs.

In fact you should do this anyway, book or not. Please, I am not practicing what I preach here on this blog. I’m purposely keeping this blog plain-jane. But most businesses and professionals will want to use graphics to create instant recognition, like what we have done on www.BuildaBetterBlog.com, or at www.biztipsblog.com, Denise’s marketing blog.

Blogs to Book: 10 Tips – Name Your Blog

This is Tip #1 for using a blog to write and market a book, in a series of ten posts. Blogs and books really do go together. Denise and I are traveling to the Publishers Marketing Association conference in Washington DC next week, and we are speaking on two panels to promote this idea and our own Blog to Book Project.

These tips have a more general application as well, so even if you don’t have a book yet, pay attention.

Marketing Your Book with a Blog:

10 Must-Do Tactics to Attract more Buyers

1. Use a domain name for your blog that relates to your book title so it becomes known and “findable.” If your ideal domain is already taken, use a version of it such as “YourBookBlog.com,” or “YourBookOnline.com.” Forward that domain name to your blog so when people type in “YourBookBlog.com” it goes to your blog site.

This makes sense doesn’t it? If you already have a title for your book, that is. If not, take the foremost concept or crucial topic that you are writing about, and get a domain name. You want to make it easy for people to find you when they sit down and type in keywords in Google, or whatever search tool they use.

Tip #6: Podcasting

Here’s an additional way to create income while marketing books or services at the same time. This is our 6th tip in the series on marketing.

Now, I have to admit, I was reluctant to get into podcasting. I’m not an auditory type and prefer reading to listening. But I have to consider the interests of clients, not just me (drats)!

And I have to admit, this works. Since starting the teleseries Conversations with Experts, the database of people with an interest in our services and products has grown by 5,000 in just one year.

6. Podcasting – create audio files easily by scheduling teleclasses and recording them. Some people like to get their information auditorily and at their convenience by downloading mp3 files to their iPods. Or, you can podcast a chapter or excerpt from your book.

Use a free teleconferencing bridge line like http://www.freeconference.com to host a group call.

Record your call, upload the audio file, and then post to your blog or podcast using a service like www.audioblog.com.

As an added benefit, you can get these calls transcribed; then convert the word doc to a PDF file which you can either give away, or sell, in exchange for people’s email address. www.CastingWords.com is a fast, affordable transcription service.

Blog Squad Recommends

Nearly everyday Denise and I are asked questions like these:

  1. Should I use a blog to market my business?
  2. How do I get more people aware of my products and services?
  3. What products do we recommend?

The answer to number 1 is a resounding "YES!" (big surprise, right?). You can get information about some of our services here.

The second question is a bit more complicated and involves building a quality list in addition to having a good strategy for marketing your business. If you’d like to talk with us about how we can work with you to implement a strategy that integrates blogs, ezines, ecommerce and database marketing, drop us a line and we’ll set up an appointment to talk.

To answer the third question, we’ve set up a blog exclusively for product and service recommendations. To be completely honest here, some of the products do pay an affiliate commission if you order through our link. Others do not. We only will recommend products and services we actually use. If you sign up for email updates, you’ll know when we recommend something new. We use and test a lot of different services, and if we like one and feel it helps our business, then we’ll post a recommendation so you can check it out for yourself.

Naked Conversations: Why You Should Blog

I was so excited when Robert Scoble and Shel Israel finally published their book about blogs, Naked Conversations that I ordered it twice on Amazon without realizing it. I’ll save my extra copy and give it away to the person who convinces me they want it the most, and who promises me they will follow through with good blogging.

If you’re just not sure you want to start something new, and find writing your newsletter enough for now, then skip reading this. Stay where you are.

But if you pride yourself on keeping in touch with the needs of your clients, start blogging and blog smart.

This book tells a little bit about the history and development of blogs, and their use by businesses, mostly the big ones. More importantly, it does a splendid job of defining why blogs are good for your biz.

Here’s a short, condensed version of why: Blogs are a conversation. If the world’s second favorite entertainment is story telling, the top is conversations (p. 43, attributed to Yossi Vardi, founder of ICQ). Collaborating is human nature, and research supports this. Humans love helping out their fellow humans, and blogs are a quick way to alert others of important information.

In fact…here’s a quotable quote: "That makes blogging the sex god of the Information Age. While word of mouth has always been the most credible way to expand awareness and adoption, blogging fits into all this as the most powerful word-of-mouth delivery mechanism to date. As Yossi Vardi told us, ‘Blogging is word of mouth on steroids.’"

Well, I don’t know about the sex god thing, but it sure is fun. Where else can you have such big conversations with so many people, and boost your Google juice while your at it?

Blogs: Getting Started

We keep getting emails and phone calls from people who are almost ready to start blogging for their businesses. And, there is some confusion about how to start.

So Denise posted a good summary of several options to you, all the way from do-it-yourself, to custom-built for you. Take a look at this post here about blogging services and what’s right for you.

Are You Ready for a Blog – the Test

Here’s a way you can determine if you and your business are ready to start blogging. As you know, Denise and I (The Blog Squad) have been touting the benefits of blogging for over a year now.

We’ve seen great results with our 9 different blogs. But blogging may not be for you. We caution people to look before they leap onto the ‘next new thing.’ If you start a blog and then abandonned it, it may be sitting there on the web looking like an abandonned store front…broken windows and all.

Take this assessment to get a read on how ready you are to set up and use a blog for building your biz online…:
