How Does Content Marketing Lead to Sales?

Ist1_3612799-computer-cash This is the real question, isn't it? After writing good content that educates and entertains, after posting on web pages, blogs, and a few key social media sites… how does content work to generate sales?

"Show me the money," you might say.

For some people, if the ROI can't be pin-pointed, forget about it. I'll leave the analytics to experts. Google keywords like "return on investment content marketing," for example.

There's no question that the return on investment of content marketing can be measured and proven. If it didn't, then why would 6 out of 10 marketers be spending more money on content marketing in 2010?

What Is a Content Marketing Information Funnel?

Pipeline-2 Are you building a content marketing information funnel? If not, you're leaving money on the table. Not only that, you're missing an opportunity to solidify the relationships your hard-earned content marketing efforts are creating.

It's odd that Wikipedia doesn't have a page written about this key internet marketing strategy. There's a page for purchasing funnel and one for sales funnel. And there are over 3 million results on Google for product funnel. Okay, don't go there now, here's what you need to know:

Content marketing works because you take a reader through the steps of getting to know you, like you, and trust you. This is the KLT factor. Here's how it works:

  1. Your blog should have cornerstone content pieces to communicate your core values and passion and business mission. These are stand-alone pages to highlight your core information.
  2. Your blog (or website) should have a well-crafted bio or About page, which tells your back story, who you are, and why you care.
  3. Your blog or website should have client stories, case studies and testimonials everywhere to tell your clients' experiences with working with you, your products and services.
  4. And next, you need continual, clear calls to action, so that readers can take the next steps.

10 Snappy Content Creation Strategies

Speed-drawing  The prospect of writing on the web is daunting for some professionals, especially those with years of graduate school indoctrination with academic theses and dissertations.

It's because writing short and snappy is better on the Web than long, convoluted, and detailed. Doctors and lawyers and other highly educated people like to be correct; sometimes that takes more than one sentence.

The problem is too much information distracts a writer from getting to point quickly and clearly. I'm preparing materials for a class I'm teaching to lawyers who want to master online marketing with blog content, articles and ebooks.

I'd say it's a challenge for some lawyers to be fast and to the point about things, for fear of being wrong or misleading people. But maybe that's stereotyping and I'm making assumptions. I usually do.

Nevertheless, I've made a list of 10 content creating strategies to help write blog posts and articles for the Web, with an emphasis on being short and snappy.

Here are 10 steps that I'm sharing with them, to help anyone write faster, clearer, better.

Attract Clients: Publish Your Ebooks on Kindle

ContentMktgwithBlogs Do you have a book on Kindle? Why not? Did you know you can publish your books on Kindle for free, and sell them there?

This is another great way to attract clients, get known, gain visibility and credibility.

My husband has transformed himself into a novelist (Die Laughing, Future Schlock: 2047, and his 3rd novel will be Azteca) and while searching for publishing options, put his first book for sale through Amazon's Kindle store. It costs nothing to do this, it's great marketing, and so far he's sold several copies.

So I wondered if it would be possible to make my ebook Content Marketing with Blogs available on Kindle. It is, but you have to charge a fee.

You can buy it here for $1 and take it with you on your Kindle:

Content Marketing with Blogs: 4 Keys for Getting Spectacular Results

So my ebook, available here for free, costs $1 if you buy it through Amazon to download to your Kindle. Why would anyone spend $1 for a free ebook? Well, you can put it on your Kindle and read it while traveling.
