Tip #6: Podcasting

Here’s an additional way to create income while marketing books or services at the same time. This is our 6th tip in the series on marketing.

Now, I have to admit, I was reluctant to get into podcasting. I’m not an auditory type and prefer reading to listening. But I have to consider the interests of clients, not just me (drats)!

And I have to admit, this works. Since starting the teleseries Conversations with Experts, the database of people with an interest in our services and products has grown by 5,000 in just one year.

6. Podcasting – create audio files easily by scheduling teleclasses and recording them. Some people like to get their information auditorily and at their convenience by downloading mp3 files to their iPods. Or, you can podcast a chapter or excerpt from your book.

Use a free teleconferencing bridge line like http://www.freeconference.com to host a group call.

Record your call, upload the audio file, and then post to your blog or podcast using a service like www.audioblog.com.

As an added benefit, you can get these calls transcribed; then convert the word doc to a PDF file which you can either give away, or sell, in exchange for people’s email address. www.CastingWords.com is a fast, affordable transcription service.

Win an iPod

Denise and I, AKA The Blog Squad, are so excited about our April anniversary celebration. It’s supposed to be a secret until next week, so all I will say right now is we’re giving away 2 iPods and a Razer Copperhead mouse in a contest. You might want to check back here next week…

I suggest you subscribe through our Feedblitz subscription form on this blog, upper right…you’ll get automatic updates in your inbox.

Why the contest? Why give away iPods? It’s been a year since we published Build a Better Blog, the Ultimate Guide to a Professional Business Blog, plus a year since we started doing our weekly Conversations with Experts teleseminar.

The iPods we’re giving away come preloaded with 43 of our experts being interviewed…Featured experts include Dave Taylor, Des Walsh, Bob Bly, Dan Poynter, to name just a few. When we calculated how much an hour of their time would cost, it came out to over $8,000 to listen to them on the podcasts!

What’s the catch? Of course, we’re asking that you submit your name, subscribe to our new Savvy Biz Tips ezine, and refer others to our contest. This is going to be a mega subscription drive during the whole month of April. We hope you’ll participate, and maybe you’ll win. And don’t worry, if you end up not liking our ezine, you can unsubscribe easily.

Article Marketing Tips

More news this week about how to maximize the impact of your articles. First, it is essential to submit them to article directories such as EzineArticles.com. Secondly, you must submit more than 20 articles, according to most experts, before this marketing strategy starts to pay off.

The pay off is in getting your articles picked up and republished on other sites, providing many incoming links to your site (and a boost in search engine rankings).

Want to know more about this? Here’s a ten page report from Yaro Starak and Brian Clark: "Builidng Traffic with Article Marketing." It’s available for free, and gives some interesting tips.

Squeeze, Baby: Gimme Yer Email

List building can be tough. Now you’ve got to squeeze, trap and hit ’em with bonuses before they will hand over their email addresses. Here’s some examples of how others are doing it, plus some good conversion stats, thanks to the prolific and knowledgeable Chris Knight of EzineArticles.com.

The "NAME SQUEEZE" email list building strategy is the act of setting up a single page where the only way you release a benefit to the reader is if they give up their email address. Some people call this a subscription trap strategy. Do these pages work? When should you use them?

Read his article on his email squeeze page conversion survey, then get yourself over to his own Email Universe Ezine squeeze page.

Email List Building: Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Bigger isn’t always better in e-mail marketing. Read this new study reported on Chris Baggot’s Blog:

The bigger the e-mail list, the lower the open and click-through rates, says a new study from e-mail service provider ExactTarget.

The 2005 study of more than 4,000 organizations 230,000 e-mail campaigns and 2.7 billion e-mail messages reports that lists with 100,000 or more names experienced an average open rate of 18.2% and click-though of 3.6%.

Those of 101-1000 names had an open rate of 42.1% and click-through rate of 6.8%.

For lists of 1,001 to 10,000, the rates were 33.2% and 5.1%.

For 10,001 to 100,000, the rates were 25.8% and 4.5%.

"This phenomenon is one of the strongest cases for audience segmentation," says Morgan Stewart, director of strategic services at ExactTarget and author of the study. "The smaller the targeted audience, the better organizations can aim their message directly to their subscribers in their e-mail communications."

The ExactTarget 2005 Response Rate Study summarizes overall open, click-through and unsubscribe rates and provides additional analyses based on day of week for sending email while examining list size and target audience.  The study is available by going here…

How to Get Read, Get Linked and Stir Things Up a Bit

Blog Links: How to get a lot!

Denise Wakeman, my fellow Blog Squad partner, writes a good post on how to get linked. Whether you’re doing a blog or a newsletter, this is important stuff. You have to be controversial. Stir things up a bit. Otherwise, your readers may go to sleep on you.

Steve Rubel points out a lesson in how to get a lot of links to your blog in his post A Lesson How to Get Blog Links. He directs to a blog with a post called 5 Things Steve Jobs Has Mislead Us About in the Last 30 Years.

Since being published on Feb. 3, the post has generated 61 comments and links from dozens of bloggers (look! I’m doing it too!). Why?  The post is:

  1. controversial
  2. it addresses a topic that is currently hot
  3. he’s passionate about his point of view and taps in the passion of others

All good things to keep in mind when writing your blog content!

So, how do you do this for your newsletters and blogs? Obviously, not everything you write can fit the bill. To start, just pick up any newspaper or read the news online. Scandals? Debates? They’re everywhere.

For example, I realize I missed a good opportunity with the Oprah/James Frey author scandal. I was furious when Oprah initially defended this author, excusing him for embellishing his memoirs. Then she raked him over national TV coals and destroyed his credibility…or rather she showed he had none.

It’s not a jump to tie this in with writing better ezines, which is my core message on this blog. What can you share that is personal and true and improves the lives of others? I missed writing about this at the time, and now it’s a little late, but not really.

My point is that everyday in the news there is something you can object to, something you can write and stir up your readers with. So, dear readers, I leave you with this challenge: What will you write today that is:

  1. Controversial
  2. In the news right now
  3. Sparks passion

Go forth and stir things up a bit!

Email Lists: Treat with Care

Just read a great article by Nick Usborne in his weekly Excess Voice newsletter. You know how marketers are always saying "your list is gold?" Well, Nick says treat it with care and respect. Here’s his article, well worth reading.

Email Subscriber Lists are Very Delicate Things

Every time you send an email or newsletter to your list, one of two things happens.

1. Your email makes a positive impression, and your readers feel you are worthy of their attention and continued interest. Or,

2. Your email is disappointing in some way, and your readers view the next email you send with a little less enthusiasm.

Put another way, every email or newsletter you send will either build on or diminish the relationship you have with your readers.

My guess is that most retailers and publishers don’t think like this.

I have a feeling that most list-owners view their list as an asset, to do with as they wish. There’s money to be made from that list, and they’ll do what it takes to maximize revenues.

An email list is a very delicate thing…

It’s not the list that’s delicate, of course. It’s the attention and respect of your readers.
