What did you think about the Ultimate Traffic Formula workshop yesterday with Michael Martine of Remarkablogger? I was amazed, quite frankly, and I don’t say that because I’m a big fan of his blog or think he’s just a down-to-earth nice guy who’s smart about business blogging.
I was impressed because he made me think. He opened up the windows about what traffic optimization is about.
(P.S. If you missed this workshop, you’ll have a chance to buy the recorded audio file and get access to the 3 ebooks in a short while.)
SEO used to have a bad name in the sense that new web site owners and innocent small businesses could fall prey to guys who promised to put you on page one of Google using hidden keywords, etc. Smart SEO tactics have come a long way.
In fact, the best traffic optimization techniques are common sense marketing tactics. It’s all about marketing and content and social media. It’s linking your message to the people whose problems you solve. It’s getting connected with the maximum people interested in your topic and expertise.
Traffic optimization starts with understanding your market and content. It ends with a few technical tactics such as keywords, permalinks, and analytics, but it starts with the 3 P’s:
- People
- Problem
- Promise
This is similar to my Content Marketing with Blogs worksheet with 5 key questions to ask and answer in key content pieces:
- What problem do you solve for your readers?
- What have been the traditional solutions to this problem in the past?
- Why aren’t these solutions working anymore?
- What do you offer that’s better/different/unique? (…and what makes you the expert?)
- What do you want readers to do now?
Until you have clarity on these basic business and marketing questions, you can’t go after traffic. It makes no sense to try to improve you traffic until you’re clear what you have to offer and who you want to attract.
Who are the people in your target market? What are their big problems that you can solve? How can you help them? What’s your offer, your promise?
Define your 3 Ps for your blog and you’ll have clear writing and relevant content. Strategy first, tactics second, execution follows. Results matter, but your real results are not higher traffic stats. That doesn’t matter. What matters are conversions, readers to clients.
