Blog to Book: The Secret Behind Expert Ebooks

BlogTurning a blog into a book is nothing new. There are software programs that will help you do this. Experts, however, will need a more polished ebook if they want to create credibility as a thought leader.

Unless you’re a fantastic writer in a sexy cutting edge topic, you’re not likely to be discovered and land a huge book deal just from your blog.

Sure, it’s happened and those people are “almost famous,” at least in the Blogosphere.

What I’m talking about is entirely different and it applies to professionals (doctors, lawyers, financial planners, executive coaches and all types of expertise consultants). If you’re any kind of expert, your credibility depends on a strong internet presence with content that showcases what you know, what you do, and who you do it with. Read More→

6 Tips for Easy Ebook Promotion
with Social Media

Ebook-Promotion-Social-MediaProducing expert ebooks has never been simpler, and promoting them has never been easier. Really? Yes, I did say “easier.”

Since social media has come into being, the way you promote your expert ebook is, in fact, a whole lot easier. It’s not just about promoting your ebook, it’s about promoting YOU! Yes, you are the expert, not the ebook.

In order to get your e-book in front of as many eyes as possible, you’ll need some patience, a plan and some creative ideas. Here are six tips to get you started:

1. Set Your Social Media in Motion

Just because you say you’re an expert, you have to have branded yourself as one. You should have a presence on social media and you have been active as well (if not, you’d better get moving.) If you don’t have time, hire a virtual assistant that is knowledgeable in the different platforms.

2. Set up Your Author Page on Amazon

Even if you’re working with a publishing house, make sure your own ‘house’ is in order. Yes, your Amazon house. Amazon is another social media site. You can go to Amazon Author Central to create your account. Once you have done that, you can feed your blog into your profile, add videos, books from your bibliography and reviews. Remember, it’s not about getting reviews, it’s about giving them as well. Your name will be associated with that review! Read More→

Expert Ebook University: Publishing at Sea

Publishing-at-Sea Sometimes my work involves traveling to far-off airports, and that’s never pleasant. Quite frankly, I don’t like leaving the comfort of my home here in paradise (Ajijic, Mexico).

However, I’ll go anywhere to learn more about the craft of writing and publishing expert ebooks for my clients!

This weekend, I’m joining Joan Stewart, the Publicity Hound and four other book experts on a Publishing at Sea cruise in the Caribbean.

I told my husband, “Atila the Honey,” I just had to go, that it was work not a vacation. But I think he’s doubtful. Oh well. Honestly, it is work, as I’ll be learning everything that’s changing in the world of digital book publishing, particularly the marketing pieces. Read More→

Expert Ebooks: More Ways Ebook Writing Goes Wrong

Expert-Knows-too-MuchIn my previous post I mentioned that a big problem for experts who want to write and publish an ebook is this: like the spy who gets killed by his own agency, “they know too much.”

Experts know so much about their area of expertise that they tend to blast readers with a fire hose of information. Not only that, but they are in love with their own point of view. I say this with appreciation and understanding, really.

If you’re a professional who’s been helping clients for decades, you know a lot and you know what works. Of course you love what you do and the way that you do it. And of course you want to share it with the world.

But here’s the thing about successfully writing an expert ebook that resonates with readers: they will download and read your ebook if it will help them understand and fix one of their problems. They don’t care so much about your products and services or point of view, as long as you and your ebook will give them the results they want. Read More→

How to Write an Expert Ebook

Computer and EbooksI get calls from executive coaches and consultants who want to publish an ebook. They ask me for help, to ghost write either for or with them.

The answer is yes: in certain fields, I am a ghost writer. I read a ton of books on leadership, and study how the big sellers on Amazon are written in this category.

Some people have clear ideas of what they want to say. They may even have an outline. Some have already published books themselves (“Never again!” some say). But most don’t have an outline, a story, a message, or a clue.

But they’re right about one thing: If you’re an expert, you should publish an ebook. It will help you get found, get known, and get clients.

I thought I’d put my best steps for writing an expert ebook into a blog post here, and create an ebook later. If I were  to write an ebook about how to write an expert ebook … how would I do that? What would I say?

First, remember that writing an ebook is not the same thing as publishing one. Two separate activities…

  • Each are important and each need a lot of time and expertise
  • Not everyone should write their own book
  • Not everyone should publish and market their own book
  • Decide which you want to do and outsource the stuff you’re not good at doing

Writing on the Web: Letting Go of the Words

I think the Web is fascinating, don’t you? Yet frustrating. So much information, so many ways to entertain yourself, so many ways to get sucked into a time machine fantasy world.

Twelve billion web pages… and most of them talking about themselves, saying nothing that’s easy to understand in a blink…

It’s not unlike Alice in Wonderland, it can be anything you want it to be. I’m reading a good book called Letting Go of the Words, by Ginny Redish.

This is a really good book for anyone charged with writing on the Web. In fact, it’s a must-read for anyone with a website or blog. If you’re a fan of usability and you’d like to improve your site’s performance with better writing, definitely get this book.

Here’s what two really smart people who know the web well say about this book: Read More→

What Is Intelligent Content Marketing?

Blue-man-student Good question, similar to "what's a great restaurant" or "what makes for a beautiful woman?" No one right answer and it depends on who the "consumer" is.

My recent post on books for intelligent content marketing shows my preference for psychology and how people think. Obviously, when it comes to writing on the Web for business purposes, you've got to consider the preferences of your readers/clients/prospective buyers.

I'm reading a book called Fascinate: Your 7 Triggers to Persuasion and Captivation, by Sally Hogshead. This is an unbelievably intelligent book that will fascinate your socks off and give you a barrel full of ideas for content marketing.

Fascinate explains the triggers behind viral marketing campaigns. I've never read anything quite like it before. Although many of the stories are familiar to me, Ms. Hogshead puts them into a marketing context.

Whether the book talks about fascinating personalities or products, it's enlightening and useful from a marketing viewpoint.

Here are the 7 triggers that cause us to be fascinated by people and stuff:

9 Must-Read Books for Intelligent Content Marketing

What are you reading? You may not have much time to keep up with the latest biz books in your field. But some of us (me) spend a lot of time reading. Let me share with you what I'm reading now that I think is really worthwhile.

Different-thinking-concept You may wonder how these relate to writing on the web, or marketing, but trust me, they do. Psychology is the meaningful connection linking marketing to people in any field or profession.

Here's what's on my night table, my desk, my lounge chair out by the pool, and next to my stationary exercise bike:

What Are the New Rules of Doing Business Online?

There are a few important people I've met on the Web who've taught me a lot. One is Seth Godin, with whom I had a talk about his new book, Linchpin.

DMScott Another is David Meerman Scott, author of New Rules of PR and Marketing: How to Use Social Media, Blogs,  News Releases, Online Videos, and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly.

David has had tremendous success with this book, for good reason. It's chock full of tips and success stories. Yet, can you believe this: when he published it, Facebook was only for students, and Twitter didn't really exist, at least not like it is today! That was only four years ago.

Not surprising, there's a new updated version of the book, since so much has happened with social media, video and content marketing on the Web.NewRules

You should take a look at the second edition, because it's more valuable now than it was originally. The 1st edition is so ground-breaking, it's been translated into 24 languages!

Go ahead and read David's blog about what's in the book, and then jump on over to Amazon and get your copy now. By the way, David's blog WebInkNow, is a must read for staying informed about what matters with content marketing.

Seth Godin Gets a Brain-Poke on What Really Matters

Pic What really matters to you? I mean beyond the usual success metrics…?

I know many people struggle. From what I hear from friends back in the US, some people are in seriously dire straights employment-wise, financially. No family is without loved ones who haven't found work, or if they have a job, aren't earning what they should.

Even when the economy improves (and it has in some sectors), there remains The Big Problem: there are a lot of unhappy people not finding fulfillment and meaning in life, in work, in what they do each day.

Seth Godin is an interesting human being who has brought us new ways
of thinking by writing 10 best sellers, including Unleashing the
IdeaVirus
, Permission Marketing, Purple Cow,and Tribes. His latest book, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? publishes on Amazon today.

This book is personal. It's about finding what really matters, and making a real difference in the world. Seth is concerned about what's happening, beyond the economy, beyond marketing.

I'm very concerned. Like Seth, I'm hoping there's a way for each of us to reach the kernel of genius
within… to start creating art instead of doing work… to engage in artistic leadership instead of mediocre obedience… to become more generous
with our genius.

So are a lot of other bloggers. You can learn more about what other people are saying over on Squidoo, here. Here's how you can listen to my interview with Seth:
